Xi'an is now the capital of Shaanxi province, which is the political, economic and cultural center in the Northwestern region of China. It has a semi-moist monsoon climate and there is a clear distinction between the four seasons. As a whole, Xi'an covers an area of 9,983 sq. km and has a population of about 8.2 million at present.

Xi'an is the champion among the Six Ancient Chinese Capitals and has the longest history in China. So far, Xi'an enjoys equal fame with Athens, Cairo, and Rome as one of the Four World Ancient Civilization Capitals. Called Chang'an meaning "permanent peace" in ancient China, Xi'an is one of the birthplaces of the ancient civilization in the Yellow River Basin area of the country.

During its 3,100-year development, 13 dynasties such as Western Zhou (11th century BC - 771 BC), Qin (221 BC - 206 BC), Western Han (206 BC - 24 AD) and Tang (618 - 907) etc. placed their capitals here. The city marked the starting point of the world-famous Silk Road. The cultural and historical significance of the area, as well as the abundant relics and sites such as the Museum of Terra-Cotta Warriors and Horses, Mausoleum of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, the City Wall of the Ming Dynasty, and Huaqing Hot Spring, etc. help Xi'an enjoy the laudatory title of 'Natural History Museum'.
Xi'an is the connecting point between the western Region of China and the Middle Region of China both geographically and socially. It is the gateway and communication axis for western provinces. Xi'an counts as the biggest central city along the Eurasian Continental Bridge, and plays an important role in the overall distribution of the national economy.
